WiscNet Wire Volume 15

Longs.pngWe are pleased to host Christian Long in our WiscNet Third Thursday Seminar on Thursday November 19, 2009 at 2:00pm CST. Christian is a parent, educator, school designer, and passionate advocate for innovative learning communities. He holds a master’s degree in education with a concentration in school design from the Harvard Graduate School of Education as well as a bachelor’s degree in English and a certificate in secondary education from Indiana University.

Christian currently teaches high school language arts in Texas and is proud papa to Beckett and Berkeley Long. His passion for both should never be underestimated. Christian is one of those people that, before meeting him, you should consider an extra hour or two of rest to prepare. His enthusiasm for teaching and learning is unlike anybody I have met.

Christian will join us to talk about The Alice Project. This project turns 16 groups of high school students loose on the book The Annotated Alice: The Definitive Edition. Teams of students use various “Web 2.0″ technologies to build a public presence for their learning, develop an ongoing (and carefully edited/maintained) digital portfolio of their discoveries, and demonstrate the use of these tools as story-telling/presentation catalysts. Behind the scenes, Christian is consciously shifting his “teaching” efforts to that of co-learner, collaborator, and advisor. He’s connecting his students with the rest of the world using the technology and helping them experience a real world audience.

I encourage interested attendees spend time poking around The Alice Project and come with questions for Christian Long regarding both instructional and technical considerations involved in a project of this nature. Feel free to leave questions/comments on this post and we’ll work to bring them into our live online session.

Say Cheese.jpgBased on the adage that “a picture is worth a thousand words,” the Campaign for Wisconsin Libraries has created a visual way to remind people of the variety and wealth of resources, services, programs, and activities their library offers — benefits that continue to bring more and more people through the library’s front door each day.

Wisconsin Libraries Say Cheese! A Day in Pictures is a new promotional project by the Campaign for Wisconsin Libraries, a program of the Wisconsin Library Association (WLA) Foundation. Using the web resource Flickr, the project will share the digital photos that libraries across Wisconsin take on one day during the week of Nov. 1-8. The Flickr group will go live to the public and the media on Nov. 18, 2009.

Visit http://www.wisconsinlibraries.org/saycheese/ for more information on how to participate!

To assist communities in their pursuit of Community Area Networks (CANs), WiscNet is introducing the CAN WORKGROUP.

What does the CAN Workgroup offer? The CAN Workgroup will bring members together to share knowledge, provide leadership, and maximize resources around Community Area Networks. Specifically, members can look to the CAN Workgroup to offer:

  • Face to Face Workshops
  • Webinars on CAN Topics (Governance, Procuring Fiber, etc.)
  • Resource Sharing (Grant Template, Letters of Support, etc.)
  • Ongoing BTOP/National Broadband Policy Updates
  • Coordination with other Groups (UW Extension, UW System, other CANs)

The CAN Workgroup will kick off on November 4th, 2009 from 2:00 – 3:30 pm. You’ll want to be a part of this meeting to help us determine what topics we will pursue for future workshops and webinars that will assist you in the development of your CAN. Reserve this time on your calendar now and more details will follow.
